Newcastle United evening headlines as Joe Willock addresses Arsenal future and Magpies injury blow

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines for Friday, February 12.

Willock on Arsenal future

Joe Willock insists he does not know what the future holds at Arsenal after his loan move to Newcastle United.

The midfielder has enjoyed an impressive start to life at the Magpies after joining on loan, scoring in last weekend's 3-2 win over Southampton.

Some good performances could well put the 21-year-old in the shop window in the summer or earn him a starting place back at the Emirates but, speaking to Sky Sports, Willock says he is just focussed on the present.

He said: "I'm trying to focus on what I have to do now, focus on Newcastle United. I'm not really looking at Arsenal at the moment.

Lee Ryder on Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson's injury

"I'm here to prove to Newcastle United that I can play every week and affect the games and win games for them. I'm not really looking at Arsenal, when that time comes for me to make a decision to go back or not that will come but right now, I'm focused on Newcastle and I'm loving every minute that I'm here."

Lawrenson on Wilson injury blow

Mark Lawrenson admits Callum Wilson's injury will be a big blow to Newcastle United ahead of facing Chelsea.

Yet the BBC Sport pundit says that the Magpies' recent form has given them enough breathing space to mean they will not be panicking too much over the absence of such a key player.

"Callum Wilson's injury is a big blow to Newcastle, and they will miss him for the next few weeks, but at least they have a bit of breathing space above the bottom three after their wins over Everton and Southampton," Lawrenson said.

"Chelsea look solid under new boss Thomas Tuchel, so I am backing them to get another clean sheet here.

"He is still working out how to get the best out of his attackers, but I think they will find a way through the Magpies."

Jones praised in dressing room

Former Bournemouth captain Simon Francis says his old teammates Matt Ritchie and Callum Wilson have been full of praise for the impact Graeme Jones has made in the Newcastle dressing room.

Former Cherries coach Jones joined Steve Bruce's backroom staff last month after spending the first half of the season at the Vitality Stadium.

Francis says he has heard good things about the impact Jones has had.

“It came down to the fact that Newcastle are Graeme’s boyhood club and it became an opportunity too good for him to turn down," Francis told Sky Sports' Football Show.

"He hadn’t been in the role at Bournemouth too long so I hadn’t actually worked with him on the grass, I met him but that was about as far as it went.

"Listening to the players speak about him, they said tactically he was an excellent coach day-to-day and he brought out the best in a lot of the players.

"We saw that certainly early on for Bournemouth with the results we were having and even speaking to Callum and Matt Ritchie recently, they’ve sung his praises up there as well.

"They said he’s brought in a different and fresher approach and whether that’s necessarily down to the results they’ve had recently, I think a lot of Newcastle fans might see it that way but he’s definitely added something else to that coaching department.

"He’s got them playing a different style of football, he’s working with them day in, day out. It’s been good for them so far no doubt.”
