Newcastle United evening headlines as Chris Wilder message is clear, Glen Hoddle's rallying call

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines on Friday, March 26.

Hoddle issues Newcastle rallying call

Glenn Hoddle has urged Steve Bruce and his Newcastle squad to 'stick together' as they continue to fight against Premier League relegation.

With just a two-point cushion on third-bottom Fulham, the Magpies have been dragged into a real dogfight as key players look set to return after the international break.

Indeed, the prospect of top-scorer Callum Wilson being passed fit, once again, will come as a timely boost.

However, amid growing concerns they will be pegged back by Fulham and into the bottom three, former England manager Hoddle has called for 'harmony' at St James' Park.

He said: "They need to stick together and be in harmony. Everyone needs to have each other's back.

"They need to fight for every aerial challenge, every free ball and, for them to win matches, it's got to be that. They need to have that spirit among them."

Nightmare consequences of relegation

As the Magpies are dragged back into the relegation picture, supporters have been reminded of the stark warning they receiving during their last stint in the Championship.

Three years on from returning to the top flight under former manager Rafa Benitez, Newcastle are two points clear of fellow relegation-candidates Fulham - albeit with a game in hand.

Speaking in 2018, Lee Charnley suggested the club would have faced 'bloodshed' had they remaining in the second tier for any longer than the one season they did.

It's proved to be a recurring nightmare for fans, too, amid this latest battle to stave off the drop.

Charnley said: "It was a one-season gamble because in terms of what we did, it was not sustainable, either from a cash point of view and also from a financial fair play point of view.

"You cannot operate a business that has a wage bill that is higher than its turnover. What would have happened if we had failed to get promoted? It would have been a catastrophe, a bloodbath."

Magpies sent a clear Wilder message

Newcastle have been sent a clear message that former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder would be interested in the top job at St James' Park - should it become available.

That's according to football reporter Alan Biggs, who made the claim during an interview with TalkSPORT.

Despite seeing the Magpies slip closer and closer to the Premier League relegation zone, owner Mike Ashley is set to stick with Bruce - for the time being at least.

Meanwhile, after leaving the rock-bottom Blades earlier this month, Wilder is thought to be keen on having a short break on the back of spells with his boyhood club, Northampton and Oxford.

Biggs said: "He's been linked with Celtic - I can't see that, but what I do see is either West Brom or Newcastle.

"I can see that one. I think it would appeal. I'm not speaking with any (direct) knowledge of having discussed it with him - but I think it would."
