Newcastle United 'enquire about Marseille midfielder' according to L'Equipe

Newcastle United are one of four Premier League clubs to have shown an interest in Marseille’s Morgan Sanson, according to L’Equipe.

The French sports ‘paper claims United have registered an interest in the highly-rated Sanson, along with Aston Villa and Everton. The midfielder was the subject of interest from West Ham and Wolves in respective transfer windows and has reportedly been made available by the Ligue 1 club.

Marseille employed former West Ham executive Paul Aldridge with the express intention of drumming up interest in the players that they have available for transfer in England, and it would be little surprise if Newcastle were linked with other players given their previous links to France and the success of Allan Saint-Maximin since moving to Tyneside.

Sanson is a midfielder who has scored five times in 27 appearances for Marseille this season and confirmed his status as one of the club’s most saleable assets.

Quite how Newcastle opting to furlough their entire scouting operation will work in practice with possible work on recruitment ahead of next season is unclear at this point. Steve Nickson is one of the staff furloughed and has told contacts that, as per the Government scheme, they should direct further communication to Lee Charnley or Steve Bruce.
