Newcastle United dressing room bid classy farewell to 'key' Rafa Benitez signing

Christian Atsu has confirmed he will leave Newcastle United this summer after five years on Tyneside.

The Ghanaian international was intially signed on a season-long loan deal in 2016, and was a member of the Magpies' Championship-winning side.

Newcastle opted to make the move permanent the following summer, and the winger was a regular starter in the following two seasons under Rafa Benitez.

However, Atsu has slowly fallen out of favour and the 29-year-old's announcement on social media on Tuesday came as little surprise to supporters.

The former Chelsea star made 121 appearances in black-and-white, but was not included in Steve Bruce's 25-man Premier League squad this term and made his last appearance in the Carabao Cup victory over Blackburn Rovers in September.

Atsu posted an emotional farewell message to fans, saying it was a 'pleasure' to represent the Magpies and that he will 'never forget' his time in the North East.

It was a post that was warmly received by supporters, and one that drew a response from several team-mates for a player that was described as a 'key part' of that promotion side by Benitez himself.

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles and top goalscorer both wrote: "All the best bro."

Academy graduate Paul Dummett commented: "Good luck Atsu."

Atsu's post did not outline his next move, although he has recently been linked with a switch to Championship outfit Huddersfield Town.
