Newcastle United defensive frailties laid bare as Watford draw encapsulated fans' frustration

Newcastle United's defensive problems were once again evident on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Watford.

The Magpies dominated the opening proceedings and should have added to Sean Longstaff's opener but they couldn't find that crucial second goal.

Newcastle's wait for a Premier League win and a clean sheet continues, with Steve Bruce unable to conjure the right formula to get his team over the line.

You have to question whether there will be many greater opportunities than at Vicarage Road, where Newcastle were wasteful in the final third and missed big chances.

They ended the match with an expected goals tally of 2.52, far higher than the solitary goal they managed against Ben Foster, with Jacob Murphy's glaring miss at the end a neat summary of their lack of clinical edge.

However, the defensive frailties were also evident as sloppy marking from a corner allowed Ismaili Sarr to level the score and had it not been for VAR, Josh King could've prevented Newcastle from taking anything from the match.

Defensively, Newcastle are struggling and that's why they must put their chances away. Only Leeds United (112) have faced more shots on their goal in their first six Premier League matches than the Magpies, with 108.

That gives Bruce's men an average of 18 shots per game and despite the best efforts of Karl Darlow, that's an unsustainable number.

The third-highest is Burnley following up with 102. That will come as little surprise as those three teams make up three of the bottom four in the division.
