Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett expecting to be back soon

Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett picked up a muscle injury in the 5-1 loss against Middlesbrough earlier in the week.

But the knock is not considered to be a serious one, and the former Wales full-back hopes to be back sooner rather than later.

Dummett was classed as doubtful to play against Stoke City today (1pm) at St James' Park and it remains to be seen whether he makes the squad for the trip to West Ham's London Stadium next weekend.

After missing the second half of last season with a tendon problem, Dummett is eager to get back on track this term and will take no risks after feeling a strain away to Boro this week and being forced off before the end.

United already have Martin Dubravka ruled out until October and Dwight Gayle could also face up to two months on the sidelines after a knee injury which requires a small operation.

For Gayle it is an unfortunate case of deja vu after missing the first half of last season with injury problems following a calf problem sustained on pre-season in China.

Steve Bruce will be without both Emil Krafth and Jeff Hendrick for today's encounter with the Potters on Tyneside.

Bruce could hand minutes to Joelinton and Yoshinori Muto after the pair returned to training this week.

Muto is on the transfer list but the club have been unable to offload the Japan international so far this summer.
