Newcastle United defender Kelland Watts joins Plymouth on a season-long loan

Newcastle United youngster Kell Watts has joined Plymouth Argyle on a season-long loan deal.

The youngster made his Premier League debut in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on the final day of last term.

United are keen on Watts, but want him to add his loan experiences from last season at Stevenage and Mansfield Town.

Speaking on his move to the south west, Watts said: “There’s some big clubs in League One that I’m looking forward to playing against so I keep progressing each season.”

Watts was the recipient of a glowing reference from Toon skipper Jamaal Lascelles this week.

Lascelles told NUFC TV: "He is a great pro, he is a great character and he understands his position. He understands he has got to reach a certain level.

"Some of the younger lads nowadays play a couple of games, get in the papers and think they have made it but Kell has been out on loan, he knows what it is like down at Stevenage and at Mansfield and he is always looking to improve his game.

"He is always talking to the senior players and he has got a great character.

"It is refreshing to see and he is pushing us. He is a great credit to the group."

Watts has been handed the No 2 shirt at Plymouth this season.
