Newcastle United defender Kell Watts completes loan switch to Mansfield Town

Newcastle United defender Kell Watts has completed a loan move to Mansfield Town until the end of the season.

The promising youngster spent the first half of the season at Stevenage, making 20 appearances for League Two's basement side.

The 20-year-old returned to Tyneside for treatment on a knee injury, and was on the bench for the Magpies' recent Premier League clashes with Wolves and Everton.

Watts will now spend the rest of the season at Field Mill, and Mansfield boss Graham Coughlan has expressed his delight at securing a deal for the versatile defender.

Speaking to the club's website, Coughlan said: “Kelland is a player who can play in numerous positions. He can play centre-half in a two or a three, he can sit in front [of the defence] or he can go in at left-back.

“He is technically very good. He’s big, strong and suits the division. I would say his best position is centre-half, but if he needs to, he’s comfortable in front of the back four.

“He knows what the division is about and he’s young, fit and hungry. He has a desire, work rate and attitude, which is exactly what we’re looking to build here at this football club.”

Hours after the signing was announced on Tuesday, the defender was selected to make his Stags' debut in the league clash at Oldham Athletic.

The England under-19 international made his first-team debut in black and white in their Premier League Asia Trophy clash against Wolves last July.
