Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark lifts lid on 'crazy season' at St James' Park

Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark insists the Magpies are capable of finishing a "crazy season" on a high in the Premier League.

With five games left the squad's aim is not only to fend off the threat of relegation, but also at least level last season's points tally of 44 points.

Given the injury crisis at United, which at one stage saw Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin all injured, doing so would be deemed as a respectable achievement behind the scenes.

In a campaign in which head coach Steve Bruce has endured loud calls to go, the Magpies have put together a four-match unbeaten run and picked up a valuable point away to Liverpool at the weekend.

Clark said: "We started alright then we were unlucky with injuries had players missing then we were hit by Covid.

"It has just been a crazy season.

"Not just for us, but other teams as well, so it has been really frustrating I think for players individually who picked up injuries.

"And it has probably been frustrating for the manager and the staff because they had players coming back then others getting injured straight away.

"It's been a real up and down season."

Clark has been part of the side that beat both Burnley and West Ham and also played at Anfield at the weekend.

Speaking to Talksport, Clark said: "There was a struggle during the season where we weren't picking up enough points as we wanted but we have managed to turn that around and pick up a few good results recently.

"The players that were injured are back.

"We are getting them back and we are hoping to finish the season on a high."

United now face Arsenal on Sunday afternoon at St James' Park where they can put themselves on the brink of safety.

Should Chelsea beat Fulham on Saturday, and United beat the Gunners, Newcastle would only need one point to assure themselves of a place in the top-flight next season.
