Newcastle United decided against move for Thomas Robert

Newcastle United opted against the chance to sign Thomas Robert - the son of Toon legend Laurent.

The winger has instead signed for Airdrie in Scotland as he wants to get regular first team action.

Robert, who had been linked with Rangers and Celtic, knows that at 19 he must be gaining senior action after his release from Montpellier.

At Newcastle he would only have been playing Under-23 action, but the Magpies decided against the move.

Airdrie director of football Stuart Millar told Lanarkshire Live: “We are delighted to get someone to the club who is the stature of Thomas Robert.

“It’s a major signing coup for the club and we are absolutely thrilled.

“He comes from a top football background with his father having played in the Premier League, for PSG and for the French national team.

“He had the option to sign a four-year deal with Montpellier but didn’t want to be playing under-23 football. He wanted to go overseas and test himself."
