Newcastle United dealt fresh injury blow as Jamal Lewis limps off during first-half at Liverpool

Newcastle United have suffered a fresh injury blow after Jamal Lewis had to be taken off during their game against Liverpool tonight.

The 23-year-old was replaced by Matt Richie in the 15th minute and appeared to be holding his hamstring as he left the pitch at Anfield.

Eddie Howe's side were leading 1-0 at the time thanks to Jonjo Shelvey's opener, but Lewis' injury may be a huge concern in their fight to stay in the Premier League.

Having lost his place to Richie at the start of the season, the Northern Irishman was recalled back to the starting XI for the home game against Norwich City last month.

He had since played an important role in the 1-0 win over Burnley and also featured in the 4-0 defeat at Leicester City, before he was substituted against the Reds.

Before he went off, Lewis seemed to have cemented himself as Howe's first-choice left-back but now may be added to the Magpies' list of injury concerns.

Federico Fernandez missed the trip to the North West with a "slight thigh problem" after also sitting out the Leicester defeat on the bench on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Paul Dummett is still yet to feature at all this season as he continues to recover from an injury.

The defender is still some way off returning to match action, however he is starting to make progress in his quest to making a comeback.

However, Lewis would have been hoping for a sustained run in the team to prove Howe that he should be the number one left-back at the club after Richie had started the season there.

Since joining from Norwich last summer, he has made 32 appearances in total, grabbing one assist and was heavily involved in the Magpies' 12th-place finish last term.

Howe may reveal more on the extent of Lewis' injury in his post-Liverpool press conference.
