Newcastle United crowd sinks to lowest of the Premier League season so far

Newcastle United’s clash with Southampton attracted the lowest crowd of the season at St James’ Park.

Despite a draw with the Premier League champions Manchester City in the last home game and a good away victory at Sheffield United, an attendance of just 42,303 turned out against the Saints.

Around 1,000 fans made the journey from the South Coast to support their side which contributed to the low crowd.

The attendance is United’s lowest for eight years and dipped below the 42,364 that showed up for a visit from Fulham.

United's average so far is 46,669 - and the crowd is around 10,000 down on the same fixture last season.
