Newcastle United 'could spend limitless amount' if PIF takeover deal is salvaged

Newcastle United's spending power could be unlimited if they able to resurrect a takeover deal with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

The £300m proposal to buy the club from Mike Ashley remains clouded in doubt after several months of back and forth between the Premier League, the Magpies and other authorities.

Newcastle fans had spent the summer months dreaming about the potential investment they could see at St James' Park - before the deal then collapsed.

With UEFA considering widescale changes to the current Financial Fair Play rules - according to a report from Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport - football finance expert, Kieran Maguire, has admitted that it could give Newcastle free reign should a takeover deal materialise.

"Let's say, for example, that the PIF deal gets resurrected at Newcastle. They could spend limitless amounts with the backing of the Saudi investment fund. Newcastle fans will be more than happy," Maguire told Football Insider.

"There's always an element of self-interest in whatever decision is made. The introduction of FFP was self-interest from the elite clubs and its potential abolition is self-interest from clubs who have got owners with lots of zeroes in their bank account.

"I'd be surprised if this goes through, simply because the existing elite clubs don't want increased competition.

"If you're going to allow some form of equity - or debt-based investment - it's going to allow an opportunity for a new Man City, Chelsea or PSG to potentially become competitive.

"That's not the ambition of the likes of Andrea Agnelli and John Glazer, people who see football simply as a means of expanding exposure and wealth."
