Newcastle United considering cardboard cut outs at St James' Park when Premier League returns

Newcastle United are one of the Premier League clubs looking at possibly using cardboard cut outs of supporters as we head into a new era of behind-closed-doors matches.

United return in a fortnight's time against Sheffied United and have been part of Premier League discussions that have seen the league apply strict conditions on stadium perimeters and who will be allowed in and out of matches.

Among the rules are strictly limited number of spaces for matchday media and controls over dressing rooms and stadium perimeters.

It means there is no prospect of fans being allowed back into grounds for the final nine matches. United are one of the clubs looking at ways to make up for empty stadiums.

Although giant wraps over parts of the stands are going to be used, upper tiers may be left - which would allow ways of representing fans who aren't there.

It was used by Borussia Monchengladbach and although it was a slightly unorthodox move, players were positive about the move afterwards.

The Athletic reports that up to eight clubs are considering the move and United are understood to be one of them.

Newcastle, who are involved in controversy over their lack of clarity on season ticket refunds as the club's takeover plays out, would look to tie up with the city's Foodbank rather than profit from the scheme.

In Germany the price equated to around £25 per match.
