Newcastle United confirm departure of head of goalkeeping Simon Smith

Newcastle United have today announced their head of goalkeeping Simon Smith will leave the club.

Smith has worked as part of the Magpies backroom staff for over a decade across two spells. His first spell saw him work under Ruud Gullit and Sir Bobby Robson between 1999 and 2004, before making a return to St James' Park back in 2015.

During his time away from Tyneside, Smith held roles with the FA, Canadian Soccer Association and LA Galaxy before his 2015 return, which saw him work alongside Steve McClaren, Rafael Benitez, Steve Bruce and Eddie Howe.

Smith has worked with a host of goalkeepers during his time at the club, which includes the likes of Shay Given, Steve Harper, Tim Krul and Martin Dubravka.

In a club statement, Smith said: "It has been a great privilege to work for Newcastle United Football Club and I have hugely enjoyed the many opportunities I've had to work with our first team goalkeepers throughout the years.

"I will continue watching and supporting the team and wish them every success for the future as I look forward to new challenges ahead."

Newcastle have confirmed first team goalkeeping coach Adam Barlett will continue to work and train the Magpies goalkeepers.
