Newcastle United comparison underlines major drop off from last season

Newcastle United secured their first win of the season against Burnley last weekend to move them off the bottom of the Premier League.

Callum Wilson’s first half goal was enough to earn all three points at the expense of the Clarets at the 15th time of asking.

However, Newcastle could not have picked a much tougher Christmas period to build on that momentum they picked up last weekend, with fixtures against Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United to come in the next two weeks.

New manager Eddie Howe has helped transform the mood of the club, particularly on the field, following his appointment last month, although the Magpies are still very much in a battle to remain in the division.

One statistic that has emerges which proves Newcastle’s drop off from this season to last, is the number of points they have picked up in the equivalent matches.

In the same fixtures last term, they secured seven more points in comparison to this, which is among the highest in the division.

Only Leicester City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Burnley have picked up less points this season in the corresponding games than Newcastle.

The Magpies were able to secure victories against West Ham United, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Burnley in the previous campaign, however they have beaten only of those sides this time around.

They also secured impressive draws against Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur in the 2020/21 season; games in which they have been narrowly defeated this time around.

In fact, the only points improvement they have managed is against Leeds United and Brighton, where they were able to secure 1-1 draws, as opposed to the defeats they picked up last season.
