Newcastle United coaching duo make emotional farewell to players after two years at St James' Park

Newcastle United coaching duo Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence made an emotional farewell to staff and players last week at the club's Benton base.

Agnew and Clemence, as expected, left their roles shortly after Steve Bruce departed Newcastle by mutual consent with Eddie Howe bringing in his own back-room team.

However, after helping keep Newcastle up both men left with the respect of the dressing room after 13th and 12th placed finishes in their two full seasons alongside Bruce.

United goalkeeper coach Simon Smith stays on but the former Gateshead stopper had previously been part of the set-up under both Steve McClaren and Rafa Benitez, and previously during the Sir Bobby Robson era.

And former Academy director of coaching Ben Dawson will remain on the first-team coaching staff after being promoted last season during the Covid crisis at United.

Dawson will be seen as the link man between the senior end of the training ground and the Academy ensuring there is a familiar face for those youngsters who get the call for the first-team squad.

A United statement read: "Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, who arrived as assistants to Steve Bruce in July 2019, have left their roles after supporting Graeme Jones during an interim period.

"The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Steve and Stephen and wishes them well for the future.

"Assistant head coach Graeme Jones, first-team development coach Ben Dawson and goalkeeper coach Simon Smith all form part of Howe’s new coaching set-up."

Howe's new line-up of Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone and sports science staff member Dan Hodges are already hard at work after arriving last week.
