Newcastle United clinch first deal of the summer as goalkeeper joins

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Mark Gillespie.

The out-of-contract signing comes in from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell and has signed a deal until 2023.

Gillespie is a former Academy stopper but returns to the club after stints in Scotland and at Carlisle United.

Bruce said after the game: "The deal has been signed in the last 24 hours.

"We're delighted to have him onboard.

"It just goes to show, he went away as a youngster and played games and now we welcome him back."

United had released Rob Elliot earlier in the week after 11 years at the club.

The Republic of Ireland stopper left the club ahead of his June 30 contract expiry.

But Gillespie can't play until the 2020/21 season with Karl Darlow and Dan Langley deputising for Martin Dubravka in the Premier League.
