Newcastle United chiefs eager to learn Rafa Benitez's final decision on contract extension

Newcastle United have issued a "no comment" response to a potentially concerning interview from Rafa Benitez with the Italian media.

In it, Benitez suggested that he was ready to listen to other offers and that he was unsure on his next move.

Speaking to Calcio Mercato, he said: "Now I am open to new possibilities, I don't know what will happen in the coming months."

And after being linked with the AS Roma job he said: "I like Italian football, that's clear, but today I don't know what will happen."

But Benitez did speak with pride after keeping Newcastle in the Premier League.

He added: "It wasn't easy, but in the end we did well.

"For a club like this, confirming itself calmly in the Premier League makes the year undoubtedly positive."

Talks between Newcastle and Benitez are now believed to be concluded and it is now down to the former Liverpool boss to decide whether he can work with the terms offered.

It is understood that United are now waiting for Benitez to get back to him with a final answer.

His current deal runs out on June 30 and players are scheduled to return to training on July 4.
