Newcastle United chiefs and Rafa Benitez kick off discussions in London over contract extension

Newcastle United chiefs are hoping to make progress on Rafa Benitez's contract extension over the next few days.

Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley are set to meet Benitez in London today as they open fresh talks on a new deal.

But while both parties go into the discussions in a positive frame of mind after a good end to the season, a swift conclusion would benefit everybody at United given that the transfer window opens today.

Benitez is expected to roll out his plans to Ashley in the capital.

Benitez is hoping that Ashley will give him more leeway on the club's transfer blueprint and that the policy of prioritising players under the age of 24 will be relaxed.

Benitez had said on Sunday: "Because we have been talking about this for a while my answer is always the same.

"We have a meeting coming soon, hopefully and then we will see where we are.

"Someone will ask me the question, do I want to stay?

"It’s very easy.

"I can see the potential of this massive club and hopefully we can do things in a way that will be good for everyone to move forward, maybe together.

"At the moment, it’s just keep talking and see what happens next week."
