Newcastle United chief Steve Bruce reacts to criticism of Martin Dubravka after defeat against Liverpool

Steve Bruce believes that Martin Dubravka will not need to be told he could have dealt with Sadio Mane's second goal in a better fashion after the 3-1 loss at Anfield.

The Slovakian rushed out but could only get a slight touch on Mane's effort at goal before the Liverpool star tapped home. Jermaine Jenas said on BT Sport the goalkeeper needed to "sort himself out".

Mane's strike came after before a bursting run from Firmino caused plenty of damage.

Bruce said: "The big mistake was the second one.
"We've give the ball away and were caught in possession and they've punished us.

"The goalkeeper will be disappointed with it with his high standards.

"When you make mistakes like that at this level then it is always going to be difficult.

"But I was pleased up to a point."

Bruce then later labelled the moment a key point in the match.

Speaking in his post-match Press conference, he added: "I'm sure Martin, when he looks at it, will think he should have done better for the second.

"It was a crucial part of the game."

Although Bruce tried to stay upbeat afterwards and reflected on Jetro Willems' opener.
He said: "Jetro will remember it.

"It's not often you get on it and smash it into the right-hand corner with your right foot.

"He only came in five or six weeks ago and has been thrown in at the deep end.

"But the more he works physically and plays with the intensity, and gets used to the Premier League goal, you can see the ability he's got.

"There's not many people can do that.

"I was delighted for him personally."
