Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce responds after fan criticism of struggling Joelinton

Steve Bruce has urged Joelinton to stick at it after another blank sheet in Newcastle United’s front-line.

The Magpies were held to a 1-1 draw by the League One minnows at Spotland on a day when the £40million man was outshone by a 40-year-old in Aaron Wilbraham.

Joelinton has only scored once for Newcastle since his club record switch in the summer and fans voiced their displeasure on a day when Newcastle once again failed to take their chances.

But Bruce tried to put an arm on Joelinton’s shoulder on a day when his loss of possession led to the equaliser.

Bruce said: “Joelinton had a disappointing time. He’s got to stick at it and play his way through. Up to two weeks ago, Almiron hadn’t scored. He’s got to stay with it.”

Bruce felt his team only have themselves to blame for being held by Dale.

He said: “If you don’t take your chances this type of thing can happen in the cup.”
