Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce pictured in the stands for EFL match

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has been pictured in the stands for an EFL contest during the international break.

The 59-year-old was seated alongside his son Alex at The Alexandra Stadium on Saturday afternoon as Crewe played host to Peterborough United.

The international break means there are no Premier League or Championship fixtures, and the Magpies currently have no players out on loan at either League One side.

However, the Magpies head coach evidently decided to use his free weekend to take in the lower-league contest alongside his son.

Bruce will be hoping he can inspire a response from his side following their disappointing defeat at Southampton in their next outing against Chelsea.

United were sloppy in possession and could not handle the hosts' press, with goals from Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong condemning the visitors to defeat.

It was another symptom of the Magpies inconsistency which Bruce revealed continues to frustrate him.

He said: "The one thing that annoys me more than anything is the inconsistency that nags away at me constantly.

"We didn't get anywhere near where we had been five days before.

"And that is my biggest disappointment."
