Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez speaks openly about his contract: 'It doesn't depend on me - I am waiting'

Rafa Benitez has revealed it isn't down to him whether he stays on as Newcastle United boss.

The Spaniard remains in talks with the club on extending his new deal but is yet to make a breakthrough on his future at St James' Park.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Brighton , Benitez was asked again about his contract.

He said: "Today was just a game, that's it.

"I said in my Press conference before the game that if we had any news we would let you know."

Benitez was then asked about a time scale on the talks.

He said: "Not really, but every day counts because in the end you want to do things as soon as possible to make sure you can do things as soon as possible to start working for next season.

"We will see."
Benitez was asked if he'd had any dialogue with Lee Charnley before or after the game.

He said: "I saw Lee this morning.

"He will come back with us, it's not an issue, we talk every week."

At that stage the question of whether Benitez was relaxed about the situation was posed.

He replied: "Not relaxed.

"It doesn't depend on me - I am waiting."

Asked how long he would wait, Benitez said: "You never know, I think it is very clear.

"Each person has their own ideas and then it's what do we want to do in the future?

"That is the key.

"If we have different visions we have to find a point in between and see if we're happy with that.

"If not we have to talk and try to move forward as soon as possible."
