Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe confirms Paul Dummett contract offer

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has suggested Paul Dummett has been offered a new contract.

The long serving defender's existing deal expires at the end of the season but Howe indicated today he would be prepared to "keep" the Geordie Academy product. Dummett has played has made just three appearances this season. He suffered calf problems earlier in the campaign but has been an unused sub in the last nine matches.

Howe said: "I really like Paul. "I think behind the scenes he's had a consistent period where he's trained. I think that's what he needed. He's had various injuries.

"But he's a leader within the group. He's not the most vocal but in terms of a role model and his history, journey through, he has a huge amount of respect from staff and players, the way he conducts himself.

"He's a very good player on top of that. Certainly he's someone we want to keep."

Howe was also delighted to hear that Matt Targett was open to converting his loan deal into a permanent move.

Howe said: "If that’s what he said then it’s a lovely thing to hear from our perspective that he’s happy at the club and enjoying everything Newcastle has to offer.

"I’d be surprised if there was any other feeling from him because he’s looked so happy and settled in well."
