Newcastle United backroom staff member becomes first of club's new era to leave St James' Park

Newcastle United fitness coach Cristian Fernandez has parted company with the Magpies after half a decade of service.

The rehab expert joined the club during the Rafa Benitez era on Tyneside but remained on board under Steve Bruce.

The former Hull City and Northampton Town backroom member says he is leaving on good terms but becomes the first staff change of the club's new era.

Speaking on his personal Twitter feed Fernandez said: "After more than five years it is time to say goodbye.

"I want to thank Newcastle United for giving me the opportunity to live great experiences enjoying this amazing Toon, where we have felt at home.

"But above all for being able to meet so many good people who helped me grow personally and professionally."

And speaking about the club's recent takeover by a Middle East consortium, he added: "I wish you the best of luck in this exciting time for the city.

"I hope to see you soon.

"Thank you very much."

Newcastle director Amanda Staveley had stated on Friday that Steve Bruce would remain in charge.

She said: "We have had an extremely busy week reviewing the business and getting to know people and it is imperative that we continue to be patient and considered in our approach.

"Change does not always happen overnight, it demands time and that we follow a carefully considered plan and strategy.

"We met Steve and the players on Monday and have given them the time and space this week to focus on preparing for what is a very important game on Sunday.

"Steve has been very professional in our dealings with him and he and his coaching team will take the team on Sunday.

"If we make any changes going forward, Steve will be the first to know but, in the meantime, we wish him the best of luck in his 1,000th match as a manager and will be joining you in getting right behind the team."
