Newcastle United and fellow Premier League clubs are awaiting further guidance on whether matches will take place as planned this weekend following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This comes after the EFL confirmed that games scheduled to go ahead on Friday would be postponed, meaning Burnley’s clash with Norwich City, and Stockport County’s trip to Tranmere Rovers are off.
An EFL statement on Thursday evening read: "As a mark of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth II earlier today, the EFL has confirmed that its fixtures scheduled for tomorrow evening (Friday 9 September) – Burnley v Norwich City and Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County - have been postponed.
"A determination regarding the remainder of this weekend’s scheduled fixtures will be made following a review of the official mourning guidance, in addition to further consultation with DCMS and other sports on Friday morning."
The Premier League paid tribute to Elizabeth II, with the country’s longest reigning monarch passing away on Thursday at the age of 96 after 70 years on the throne.
They are, though, yet to confirm whether the matches scheduled for this weekend will go ahead, with a decision likely to come on Friday morning. Newcastle United are set to face West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
On her death, an official statement read: “The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth II. Our thoughts and condolences are with The Royal Family and everyone around the world mourning the loss of Her Majesty.”
