Newcastle United assistant manager believes the club have already made a 'terrific' signing

Jeff Hendrick will be a 'terrific' signing for Newcastle United and has proved that he is a 'good footballer' in his first week at the club, according to assistant manager Steve Agnew.

The Ireland international signed a four-year deal with the Magpies last week and made his debut in the 2-1 win against Barnsley on Saturday.

Hendrick had not played a competitive game since March - the midfielder did not feature for Burnley during the restart as his contract ran down - and kept on top of his fitness in his in-house gym and by training in his local park.

The 28-year-old got an hour under his belt at the weekend in a more familiar midfield role and Agnew has been impressed by what he has seen from the new arrival.

"Jeff hasn't played much football since March. He missed the back end of Burnley's season but you can see in training that he's a good footballer," he told NUFC TV.

"He's in really good condition physically and I think it's important, like any new player when they come to a club, to fit in with his team-mates and how they play and where they play.

"He showed good bits of combination play down the right-hand side. You can see he's got a good understanding of how to play the game and I think he will be a terrific signing for us."
