Newcastle United 'ask' about £12m Will Hughes transfer with Isaac Hayden swap mooted

Here is your 4am Newcastle United transfer digest.

Hughes interest?

Newcastle United have asked about a potential £12m move for Watford midfielder Will Hughes, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Joe Willock will likely be the Magpies number one target this summer following a remarkable loan stint which saw him equal Alan Shearer's record for netting in seven consecutive Premier League matches.

However, any deal to re-sign the in-form 21-year-old will likely prove costly, and the Sun claim Hughes fits Steve Bruce's budget and posseses the 'all-round ability' the head coach is looking for.

Aston Villa and Fulham have also been linked with the Hornets midfielder, who is currently in the process of negotiating a new deal at Vicarage Road.

Watford have placed a £12m price tag on Hughes' head despite the fact he is entering the final year of his deal, and have expressed an interest in a potential swap for Isaac Hayden.

Alaves 'very interested'

Alaves are understood to be 'very interested' in securing a return for Magpies defender Florian Lejeune, according to Spanish title Noticias de Álava.

The Rafa Benitez signing spent the last season in La Liga rebuilding his match fitness following two significant injury setbacks on Tyneside.

However, any deal for Lejeune is proving to be 'complicated' with the Magpies said to prefer a permanent transfer rather than another loan.

The 30-year-old is entering the final year of his deal at St James' Park, and was pictured back for the first day of United's pre-season at their Benton base.
