Newcastle United are hopeful in-form Ayoze Perez will be fit enough to face Liverpool on Saturday

Newcastle United are growing increasingly confident that Ayoze Perez will be fit enough to start Saturday's huge match against title-chasing Liverpool.

The 25-year-old - who has scored each of the Magpies' last five goals - was forced off in the 33rd minute of the 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend with a bruised hip.

And, while there were initial fears that Perez may be forced to sit out at game against second-placed Liverpool, or possibly only be fit enough for a place among the substitutes, United's coaching staff are cautiously optimistic that the Spaniard will be able to start at St James' Park on Saturday.

Ayoze Perez gives update on his hip injury as he admits he's 'desperate' to play against Liverpool

Although Perez is still likely to undergo a fitness test later in the week before any final decision is made, the forward has been able to move more freely over the past couple of days - and the news that he is winning his battle to be face the Reds will be welcomed by supporters and manager Rafa Benitez.

Perez has scored eight goals in his last 10 outings, including netting his first-ever Premier League hat-trick earlier this month, and the forward will be crucial to Newcastle's chances of causing a major upset by defeating Premier League title hopefuls Liverpool on Satuday evening.

Miguel Almiron will miss the game due to a hamstring injury which has ended his season early, but two of the 'Three Amigos' in Perez and Salomon Rondon could start the game.

Speaking about his injury after scoring at the Amex on Saturday, Perez said: “I’m in pain right now and it’s very sore. I got a kick in the hip an I couldn’t run any more.

“I’m desperate to be fit for the Liverpool game. That’s in my mind right now; to get ready and fit for that game. Hopefully it’s just a kick that can be helped with a bit of ice and some rest, and then I’ll be ready for it."
