Newcastle United are assessing fresh injury blow ahead of festive period

Newcastle United have been dealt a fresh injury blow ahead of the festive period after Paul Dummett was forced off against Crystal Palace.

The left-sided defender put a solid shift for United after Jetro Willems was ruled out with a knock for the clash with Eagles.

Dummett came off in stoppage time and now faces assessment over the next few days ahead of the trip to Manchester United.

After the game Steve Bruce said: "He’s (Dummett) got a groin injury.

"We’ll see how he is.

"For Dummy to play and we were struggling on that left side with (Jetro) Willems out.

"It was difficult for him, but you know how it is for him – he sticks at it, and never, ever lets anybody down."

Newcastle are sitting comfortably on 25 points and in ninth place in the table.

Bruce added: "We're only halfway, but they've got a good spirit and a decent attitude to go to work, and I'm delighted for them as well.

"They've been maligned in certain places, but they keep having a go, which is important."
