Newcastle United announce final friendly with clash against Championship side at St James' Park

Newcastle United have confirmed their final pre-season friendly fixture with a home clash against Stoke City.

The game will take place at St James' Park on September 5 with a 3pm kick off against the Sky Bet Championship outfit and sees Toon old boy Michael O'Neill bring his side to the North-East.

United's Premier League campaign kicks off a week later with a trip to West Ham at the London Stadium.

A club statement read today: "The Potters - managed by former Magpies midfielder Michael O'Neill - will travel to St. James' Park on Saturday, 5th September for a 1pm (BST) kick-off.

"Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic and the Government guidelines around it, spectators will not be able to attend the match."

United started their pre-season with a 3-0 win over Crewe Alexandra in York this week and continue their work with a friendly against Barnsley at the club's Benton base on Saturday with a 1pm kick off, but again the clash is behind closed doors and no fans are allowed to support their team.

Newcastle will also face Middlesbrough at Rockcliffe and the Teessiders have made it clear that the public are not welcome at their training complex.
