Newcastle United and rivals dealt financial blow after Bournemouth's play-off defeat

Newcastle United have been dealt a £2.4million blow after AFC Bournemouth's defeat in the Sky Bet Championship play-offs.

The Magpies would have scooped up some extra spending money had the Cherries won in the play-offs but their defeat means the South Coast side will stay in the EFL, and subsequently now require Premier League parachute payments after their relegation last year.

Had Jonathan Woodgate's side won promotion the money would have been pushed back into top-flight coffers and distributed between the rest of the Premier League sides.

However, Newcastle will share an unexpected £83million financial boost after Watford and Norwich City's promotions back to the Prem at the first attempt.

Both clubs were due parachute payments over the next two years if they remained in the Championship but their immediate return to the top flight means that money will instead be distributed among top flight clubs.

That equated to around £4.8million per club and Premier League sides were hopeful for more had Bournemouth gone up.

The play-off battle continues between Swansea and Barnsley who battle to face Brentford after their 3-2 aggregate win in the semi-finals.
