Newcastle United and Premier League rivals pushing for June 30 finish to season

Newcastle United are set to join a Premier League video conference on Friday as the latest proposals to finish the season are discussed.

The big subject on the agenda is getting the remainder of the top-flight season completed before June 30.

Clubs are eager to get the season ended by this date so they can use players who will see their contracts run out in July, at which stage many would be free to walk away or refuse to participate with moves to their next club on the horizon.

This would give teams ample opportunity to get prepared for the start of the 2020/21 campaign in good time following the coronavirus pandemic which resulted in the campaign becoming suspended in March.

The remaining fixture list - with the Magpies having nine matches still to play - would be played out behind closed doors with neutral venues such as Wembley and St George's Park being offered for use by the FA.

Clubs in Germany have now returned to training ahead of a possible return to play in June but Premier League clubs are fearful of reaching match fitness if they can't do likewise soon.

Another proposal on the table will be returning to play but not completing all 38 games so that at least some scenarios - such as Liverpool winning the title - are deemed as mathematically settled at least.
