Newcastle United and Premier League rivals offered restart hope as Serie A discuss training return

Newcastle United and their Premier League counterparts have received some hope that football can restart in June with Serie A chiefs hinting a return to work next month.

Italian football federation president Gabriele Gravina has spoken to the media in Italy to reveal the next step with teams told they could be back in training within two to three weeks.

Gravina says players must be tested for coronavirus before they get back on the training field.

He said: "Soon, there will be a meeting.

"We will establish the procedure which we will then communicate.

"We will start, I hope, at the beginning of May with tests to ensure that players are negative and training can follow.

"Will we play through the summer?

"We don't have a deadline but the idea is to finish the championships."

Newcastle cancelled their return date to training after initially suggesting they would be back in work in early April.

Premier League chiefs are hoping to get the green light to reboot the 2019/20 campaign in June and July with the FA now stepping up to offer both Wembley and St George's Park to play matches.
