Newcastle United and Premier League counterparts already doubting April 4 restart

Doubts about whether Premier League action will return on April 4 are growing ahead of this week's crunch top-flight meeting to decide what happens next in English football.

Newcastle United and their Premier League counterparts were told on Friday that play was suspended until at least early April.

The talk in Italy right now is that Serie A clubs will not return to action until May and the season will run on until June 30 when it is hoped that Covid-19 has eased in Italy.

Premier League clubs will look at proposals for a revised fixture schedule this week with Euro 2020 set to be scrapped and space set aside in May and June to complete fixture lists.

Another big talking point will be whether clubs receive their full TV and merit payments for the season with Newcastle scooping £120million last term and hoping for similar this time around.

Ahead of the meeting, Everton's director of football Marcel Brands told the Dutch media: "Whether the league will be finished will affect TV funding.

"It will depend on what's going to happen to the Europe and Champions League. But I wonder if we can play football on April 4.

"I don't think that chance is that big."
