Newcastle United and Macauley Bonne - sources respond to transfer claims ahead of January window

Newcastle United sources have played down reported interest in Charlton's Macauley Bonne.

Reports surfaced on Monday that United were leading the way for the 24-year-old striker but those claims are thought to be wide of the mark.

Bonne has hit six goals for Charlton so far this season under difficult circumstances, and Chronicle Live has been told that while there have been inquiries from Premier League clubs, the Magpies are not one of those to have done so - although a move to the North East would be of interest.

Leicester City have also been linked but those close to the striker feel that guaranteed first-team football is more important for his development at this stage of his career.

The forward only moved from Leyton Orient in the summer and has seized his chance in Lee Bowyer's side after an injury to Lyle Taylor.

The Magpies have been credited with an interest in a goalscorer this January as £40m man Joelinton struggles to find the net since his summer move.

Hull City's Jarrod Bowen is someone that United have looked at and a player Steve Bruce admirers.

But with the forward in talks over a new contract - his current deal expires in the summer - it's uncertain to whether the Humber side will let him go next month.
