Newcastle United and England legend Paul Gascoigne spotted in pub amid coronavirus distancing advice

Drinkers in a Lancashire pub were left stunned when Newcastle United legend Paul Gascoigne stepped through the door.

The former England midfielder popped into The White Swan in Swinton with friends on Wednesday night and even spared time to pose for pictures with fans.

The Geordie player, known affectionately as 'Gazza', spent a couple of hours at the pub where they turned up the music and had a small party.

Lindsey Smethills, the landlady of the The White Swan, told ChronicleLive she couldn't believe it when the 52-year-old walked in.

She said: "I think he had come in with some friends after being out for a meal and came in for a night cap.

"He was in for a couple of hours and he was so nice.

"At first I didn't believe it was him. But as soon as I heard his accent I knew it was him. I couldn't believe.

"Some of the punters were coming in and were like big kids when they saw him.

"We ended up putting the music on and had a bit of a party.

"He was so friendly with everyone and was getting pictures with everyone.

"With everything going on with the coronavirus at the moment and not knowing if we'll be open next week, it was a great to see him and lifted spirits."

Gascoigne told The Mirror earlier this year how he is finally at peace and loving life again after years of struggling with alcoholism.

He said anti-alcohol pellets have helped him turn his life around - and added he would buy a pub in Newcastle in the future.
