Newcastle United among clubs in talks over replacing player names with Black Lives Matter slogan

Premier League clubs including Newcastle United are in talks over the possibility of replacing players' names with support for Black Lives Matter.

Top-flight clubs are discussing the idea of displaying a Black Lives Matter slogan on their kit, along with one honouring the NHS.

The Mirror report that the slogan would be carried across each players' back.

Player names would be replaced only for the first round of Premier League games back should the proposals go ahead.

It is an idea that is said to have been broached during Thursday's meeting as clubs nailed down the final details for next week's Premier League return.

Players are reportedly very keen to demonstrate their support for the Black Lives Matter movement following two weeks of global protests after the death of George Floyd.

The captains of every club have come together to suggest going beyond the display of gratitude to the NHS that was previously proposed.

Any decision to show support for the movement will mark a shift in stance from the Premier League, which has previously shied away from gestures such as this, but the organisation is not expected to stand in the way of players' desire.

One idea that was suggested earlier this week was the possibility of teams taking a knee before games in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Liverpool previously gained praise for their decision to take a knee during a training session at Anfield recently.

An orchestrated show of support would be in contrast to Germany's Bundesliga, where individual players such as Jadon Sancho and Marcus Thuram opted to support the movement in goal celebrations.
