Newcastle United 0-1 Mainz player ratings as Sven Botman shines and Elliot Anderson makes case

Newcastle United took on Mainz in their final friendly of their summer pre-season tour of Austria.

Following on from Friday's 3-0 win over 1860 Munich, the Magpies stepped it up against Bundesliga opposition this afternoon but neither side were able to break the deadlock in the first half.

However, Delano Burgzorg's second half strike was enough to condemn Eddie Howe's men to their first defeat of pre-season this summer. Here's how Lee Ryder rated the Newcastle United players.

A good work out and unlucky with first half free-kick. Led the team well for the first hour.

Fabian Schär 7

A comfortable display and showed he works well with Botman.

Unflappable on his preferred left-hand side. Ice cool amid scorching temperatures. Some effective balls into the field.

Taken off after half an hour in pre-arranged substitution.

Miguel Almiron 5

Struggled to make an impact in the first half but had a couple of openings before being taken off.

Joelinton 8

An imposing presence in midfield and made some fine clearances.

Ryan Fraser 6

Not much impact down the left.

Sean Longstaff 6

Battled hard enough in the heat.

Chris Wood 6

Sent one effort high over the bar. Needs pre-season goals to stay in mind of Howe.

Slotted in at left-back in change after half an hour.

Organised the defence well enough and yet to concede.

Emil Krafth 7

Caused a few problems down the right.

Jamaal Lascelles 7

A determined display.

Dan Burn 7

Usual quality as he breezed through.

Matt Targett 6

A decent effort as he got more minutes in the tank.

Jacob Murphy 6

Had a great chance to score but timed his move wrong.

Joe Willock 5

Lost the ball a couple of times.

Jonjo Shelvey 6

Worked hard. Sent one shot high over the bar.

Elliot Anderson 7

Making his case to stay. Some good runs and had fans chanting "Geordie Maradona"

Caused some damage down the left. Pulled it back for Shelvey who should have done better.

Callum Wilson 6

Missed a good chance with a one on one when the keeper saved.
