Newcastle transfer gossip: Magpies 'on the trail' of Huddersfield midfielder Lewis O'Brien

Newcastle United are weighing up a summer swoop for 'highly-rated' Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O'Brien.

That's according to the Sun, who report the 22-year-old's form in the Championship this season has attracted attention from several Premier League clubs.

It is expected to be another quiet transfer window with the financial cost of the pandemic likely to lead to a cautious approach from Premier League clubs.

Steve Bruce has been clear in his desire to agree a deal for on-loan Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock, although reports have indicated a fee of around £20m may be needed to sign the 21-year-old.

However, the Magpies head coach has also reportedly earmarked O'Brien as a potential summer recruit who could strengthen the squad for a nominal fee.

The midfielder has impressed despite the Terriers' current battle to avoid relegation to League One, but survival might not be enough for Huddersfield to hold on to their rising star.

The same report also claims Bruce is open to permanent exits for on-loan duo Yoshinori Muto and Florian Lejeune.

Both have enjoyed loan spells in La Liga with Eibar and Alaves respectively, with the latter proving his fitness following an injury-hit spell on Tyneside.

But the report claims there is a consensus at United that Lejeune has 'lost a yard of pace', with the club considering a transfer this summer.
