Newcastle transfer breakthrough confirmed by selling club's president

Municipal president José Córdova has confirmed star player Rodrigo Vilca will fly to Newcastle at the start of October after the two clubs reached an agreement.

21-year-old Peru international Vilca will join United on a cut-price deal - and give Newcastle a highly-rated South American prospect who can play in the number ten role or in midfield.

The plan is for United to assess Vilca before deciding whether he would benefit from a loan move.

His current club have been negotiating with Newcastle for weeks but Cordova has now confirmed that a deal has been agreed.

"There is already a formal proposal by Newcastle and Rodrigo Vilca will travel to England on October 1," he told Peruvian radio station Voces Futbol Peru.

"He is a very important player for us, but he will play his last match this Wednesday. He has a community passport because he lived in Spain for 11 years so he will not be a foreign player for Newcastle."

United do not see Vilca as a ready-made first team player and are still looking at recruitment options ahead of next week's transfer deadline.

Newcastle still have their full compliment of loan slots but will also need to move players on, with a squad limit of 25.
