Newcastle training ground moment stuns long-serving staff who have 'never seen anything' like it

Jamal Lewis wants to put in 'great performances' every week this season after readily admitting that Newcastle United supporters did not get to see the very best of him in his first campaign with the club.

The Northern Ireland international completed his £13.5m move from Norwich City just a few days before the Magpies' season opener against West Ham nearly a year ago.

However, that first outing at the London Stadium proved one of only 20 league starts Lewis made last season after the left-back's campaign was disrupted by a longstanding hernia issue and the lasting effects of COVID.

Lewis has looked more like himself in pre-season following a hernia operation. The 23-year-old has caught the eye with his attacking play during some of Newcastle's friendlies, particularly the win at Doncaster last month, where he set up two goals in the Magpies' 3-2 win.

Lewis can certainly get up and down the pitch and, as one of Britain's most promising middle-distance runners as a youngster, the former winger unsurprisingly led the way during the timed runs on the first day of pre-season last month.

Dan King, Newcastle's long-serving managing editor, admitted he had 'never seen anything like that in all the years' he had been at the club as he asked Lewis about laying down a marker at the club's training ground.

"For me, personally, I've always had a good engine on me," Lewis told NUFC TV ahead of facing former side Norwich at St James' Park on Saturday.

"I used to do athletics when I was younger so it was something I pride myself on.

"It's just something I want to use on the pitch. The fans probably saw it a few times last year but not enough.

"This year, I just want to show my energy, my enthusiasm, and use my attributes to put in great performances week in, week out."
