Newcastle told to prioritise replacements for 'old defensive unit'

Paddy Kenny has told Newcastle's new owners they need to strengthen the 'old defensive unit' if they're to stave off relegation this season.

The Magpies have kept just one clean sheet in the Carabao Cup against Burnley and have conceded more than one goal in nine of their 13 Premier League games this season.

Eddie Howe's side have the worst defensive record in the division having conceded 29 goals in the opening third of the season and need a vast improvement if they're to survive relegation.

Newcastle have not signed an out and out centre-half since the arrival of Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar in the 2018/19 transfer window.

Their back line has had some investment with the likes of Emil Krafth and Jamal Lewis, but both of whom are not considered first team regulars.

There's been plenty of speculation about Newcastle's January transfer budget and plans, but one things for certain, is that then need investment into their defensive unit.

“Listen, it’s an old defensive unit – I’m sure Howe will want to strengthen that," Kenny told Football Insider.

“You can’t keep conceding goals game after game, especially after you’ve just scored yourself – like against Brentford.

“It just shows a lack of concentration. That is a key thing that was drilled into me when I was playing. It’s this concept of being really solid for 5-10 minutes after scoring.

“You go into two banks of four if you have to – or stick everyone behind the ball.

“If you concede straight away you go from being on the front foot to being on your backside.

“It’s something they’ve definitely got to address.”
