Newcastle told to make ‘massive statement’ signing after Sandro Tonali deal

Former Newcastle United striker Louis Saha has tipped the club to make another statement signing after agreeing a deal to bring AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali to the club. The Italian international is expected to complete his move to St. James' Park in the coming days.

The proposed £55million move is viewed as a real injection of quality into the Toon's engine room with Eddie Howe's side gearing up for a return to the Champions League. Tonali was part of the AC Milan side that reached the semi-final of the competition last season - only to be beaten by arch rivals Inter Milan on their route to the final.

Newcastle have been linked with a whole host of talent this summer, particularly in midfield as they look to kick on next season and repeat their top-four finish. The Magpies are reportedly eying another midfielder this summer and another striker following Chris Wood's departure for Nottingham Forest.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa is among the latest names to be linked with a move to St. James' Park and Saha believes a player of his ilk would see Newcastle's rivals sit up and take note.

Saha told Betfred: "Sandro’s a very good prospect. If they could bring another player such as Federico Chiesa, or other players with that type of talent, to St James’ Park, then that would be a massive statement.

"I think they need two more statement signings like this to get even greater recognition and respect in not only England, but across Europe too.”
