Newcastle told Harry Maguire would be a 'great signing' as Man Utd defender looks set for transfer

Harry Maguire would be a 'great signing' for Newcastle United as the out-of-favour Manchester United looks set for a summer exit. That is the view of former Liverpool and Magpies winger John Barnes, who can not see a way back for the England international at Old Trafford.

Maguire has fallen down the pecking order at the Red Devils, with Erik ten Hag preferring summer signing Lisandro Martinez as Raphael Varane's defensive partner. The former Leicester City centre-back still has two years left to run on his contract, but reports suggest a transfer in the upcoming window seems inevitable.

Newcastle boasted the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League, with Fabian Schar and Sven Botman forging an impressive partnership. However, Barnes feels Maguire's performances for England proves he could still offer plenty to Eddie Howe as he looks to build a squad capable of competing on four fronts next season.

He told indiabetting: "I think Maguire can have a better time at Newcastle. I think so. Because of course, you look at him when he plays for England and of course Harry always plays and Gareth Southgate loves him in the team.

“It just hasn’t worked for him at Man Utd and once it doesn’t work, it’s going to be difficult for the fans to back him. Once he’s got this perception, no matter how well you do for England or elsewhere, it will be difficult for him to do that at Man Utd.

“I think Maguire would be a great signing for Newcastle. He’s English, he’s a main player for the national side and he’d be a good signing for Newcastle if it comes off.”
