Newcastle to open contract talks with Sean Longstaff

Newcastle are set to open contract talks with midfielder Sean Longstaff.

The academy graduate's contract runs out in the summer and the midfielder will be free to talk to foreign clubs in January and potentially sign an agreement elsewhere.

The Magpies midfielder was linked with a move away from Tyneside this summer after falling down the pecking order at St. James' Park.

Everton and former Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez was keen on reuniting with the Toon midfielder. The former Magpies boss gave Longstaff his debut at the club and is an avid fan of the midfielder.

The Mirror (5th September, pg78) claims that the club are keen to keep the midfielder at Newcastle beyond this summer.

Jens Cajuste reveals transfer 'disappointment'

Jens Cajuste has revealed he is 'disappointed' a summer transfer to the Premier League did not materialise amid links to Newcastle United.

The Magpies were among a host of clubs tipped to move for the Sweden international, with the likes of Brentford, Leeds United and Lazio also credited with an interest.

ChronicleLive previously reported on August 12 that senior figures at Cajuste's club Midtjylland expected the midfielder to be sold in the summer window.

The 22-year-old had spoken of 'counting down the hours' to the transfer deadline in the hope of securing an eight-figure move to one of Europe's leading leagues.

However, no transfer was agreed and Cajuste will remain with the Danish club now until at least the January window.

Newcastle exit led to 'heartfelt' voicemail

The Newcastle United squad had long since jetted off for their end of season breaks when Sir Bobby Robson attempted to get in contact with one of his players - who was about to cross the divide.

It had been a draining season - Newcastle suffered a heartbreaking UEFA Cup semi-final defeat against Marseille and narrowly missed out on the top four - but Sir Bobby had good reason to interrupt Steven Caldwell's summer sojourn in 2004.

Caldwell, after all, had agreed to cut short his loan spell at Leeds just a few weeks previously after the black-and-whites were hit by an injury crisis at the back.

While Caldwell knew he would be moving on at the end of his contract, the Scot relished the opportunity to come back, play the final three games of the campaign and bid farewell to the club he loved.

Caldwell still remains grateful to Sir Bobby for giving him that chance to this day, but it was the Newcastle manager who was ringing the defender to express his gratitude ahead of his move to Sunderland.

Although Caldwell missed the call - the centre-back was on holiday in Spain at the time - Sir Bobby left him a voicemail.
