Newcastle to face a familiar face on Tuesday as ex-Magpie joins Rotherham United

Newcastle United were already expecting to line up against a familiar face in Dan Barlaser when they take on Rotherham United on Tuesday evening.

But they will now come up against another former Magpie after Northern Ireland international left-back Shane Ferguson joined the Millers on a free transfer last week.

After spending six seasons with Millwall following his departure from Newcastle, the 30-year-old was a free agent after leaving the Lions at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

And he has now linked up with the League One outfit on a two-year deal and is in line to make his home debut for the South Yorkshire outfit against Newcastle at the New York Stadium on Tuesday.

He tweeted on Sunday: "Delighted to have signed for @OfficialRUFC, thanks everyone for the messages since I have arrived at the club. Looking forward to the season."

Ferguson made 32 appearances for Newcastle in total, having broken through into the first team and helped the Magpies reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League in 2013.

He joins another former Magpie, Barlaser, who made five first team appearances for Newcastle of his own and the pair will look to spearhead the Millers' bid for promotion back to the Championship.
