Newcastle teacher Glen Bunn wins £125,000 on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire thanks to 'pure guess'

A Newcastle-based science teacher was helped on his way to winning a massive £125,000 on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire thanks to a 'pure guess' on a question about the Oscars.

Glen Bunn, who lives in Durham and is a big NUFC fan, was first on the world famous quiz show last weekend as he faced a series of questions from host Jeremy Clarkson.

He raced through the early questions but found himself stuck on one worth £32,000 about rankings of chef in a restaurant kitchen.

He used one of his lifelines to ring his dad Charles who gave him the correct answer but, as I TV viewers saw Glen in action again on Saturday night, his other Phone a Friend - his wife's best friend Molly - was unable to help him with a question about the Academy Awards.

The question was: 'From the 2000 ceremony awards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which letter?'

The options were G, K, M and W and after Molly said she didn't know at all and with him thinking Kate Winslet had "probably" won one, Glen took a stab in the dark at G.

He wouldn't have lost any money had he been wrong, but luck was on his side, as G was correct, which boosted his prize fund up to £64,000.

And, after saying he'd use some of his money to treat his children to a trip to Disneyland, Glen got some more luck when the £125,000 question was one he knew straight away, thanks to his BSc in Criminology and Forensic Science.

That question was' The acronym CRISPR relates to a technology used in which area of scientific research?' to which Glen instantly gave the correct answer of gene editing.

Glen finally came unstuck on a question about artist Vincent Van Gogh and happily took his £125,000 money rather than risk losing nearly losing £100,000.

Jeremy told him "Well done you!" as Glen walked across the studio with a big smile on his face, before the former Top Gear presenter remarked: "There's lady luck riding out the room!"
