Newcastle ‘target Rhian Brewster after baulking at £25m Ainsley Maitland-Niles price’

Newcastle have reportedly asked Liverpool about signing their striker Rhian Brewster on loan.

The Magpies are believed to have entered the race to secure the services of the exciting youngster for the upcoming season after baulking at Arsenal ’s valuation of Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Steve Bruce’s side made enquiries into the FA Cup winner but have been put off by his £25million asking price, according to The Telegraph, which also reported that the Gunners have rejected an offer of £15million from Wolves.

The change in priorities for Newcastle puts the focus on their efforts to bring in Brewster, the 20-year-old English striker who has spent the calendar year so far on loan at Swansea City.

However, Jurgen Klopp may opt to keep Brewster at Anfield for the next campaign.

Brewster signed a five-year contract with Liverpool back in 2018, having moved to Merseyside from the Chelsea Academy aged 14.

He averaged a goal every other game in his 20 appearances for the Swans, either side of the suspended Championship season.

He is certain to have impressed Klopp in pre-season, scoring twice in a friendly against RB Salzburg, as well as against VfB Stuttgart.

Brewster has also been a regular in the England youth set-up and was part of the side that won the FIFA U17 World Cup three years ago, winning the Golden Boot in the competition.

He was named in Aidy Boothroyd’s England U21 squad for the first time last summer.

His apparent potential could lead to an intense contest for his signature, with a number of clubs expected to express their interest.

Newcastle are in desperate need of a striker after Dwight Gale picked up a knee injury which will rule him out for several months.
